Answer: In addition to what Bill has suggested (and is the most likely cause) there is another possibility, if the edge of the coin isn't showing any copper. The coin blanks are made out of three layers: a core that's pure copper, and outer layers that are 25% nickel, 75% copper. Each of the layers is about a third the thickness of the coin. The metal comes in giant rolls, and the coin blanks are punched out of the roll. The punches that create the blanks usually "pull" some of the top layer down over the edge of the copper, and then some of the copper over the edge of the bottom layer. If it pulls enough metal, the cupronickel top layer covers the copper, which doesn't get pulled down, and the edge of the coin ends up being silver-colored. |

I have a question about postage stamps values other then the 42 cent stamp? Question: My mom passed and I was cleaning out her stuff. Found a box of stamps and besides the 42s there were 2 six cent, 1 five cent and 1 two cent stamp. Yeah I can toss them but what denominations can I buy to use them up. Please don't advise a frankenstein envelope with 5 stamps but figure 2 or at most 3 stamps each. Answer: When postage rates went up, and my way to protest was to put only 1 cent stamps on the envelop! Hahaha... well, you sure do need a lot! You can use them any time you need a few extra cents here or there. It is unlikely you will use them as is -- you are going to have to get a few more. Stamps come in a lot of denominations, and you can get a few so that you can make up the 42 or more that you need. You may use them if you were sending larger envelopes or a parcel. Just keep them -- you never know when you will need them. |
