The Popularity Of Postage Stamp Collecting

You may be wondering, "Why do people collect postage stamps?" Initially, British children saw collecting as a fun activity, since stamps were inexpensive to buy and had vivid pictures. These days many people are prompted to collect because a relative has passed down the tradition or bought them a souvenir sheet of stamps. Today, over 20 million Americans engage in postage stamp collecting, making it one of the most popular type of collection compilations.

In 1840, Britain introduced the "Penny Black" as the first adhesive postage stamp. Little did Britain realize that this would set off a postage stamp collecting craze among the youth, otherwise known as "Timbromania" (meaning "stamp madness".) As these little hobbyists aged, they proudly passed their stamp collections down to the next generation and thus a market was born.

The US caught on to this Timbromania in the 1930s, when the first souvenir sheet was printed and the 65-cent "Graf Zeppelin" portrayed a German blimp. During the Great Depression, many stamps were incinerated since few families could afford a book of stamps during this time period, since the cost of one would also pay for a family of four to eat for one week!

It became the misprints that became the most coveted in the world of collecting postage stamps. Most serious collectors will try to seek out a rare stamp resulting from a printing error. For instance, the "Inverted Jenny" is a US postage one from 1918 featuring a photo of a Curtiss JN-4 airplane where the plane was mistakenly printed upside-down!

Only 100 were ever printed and a block of four just sold at an auction for $2.7 Million! The US-made "Benjamin Franklin Z Grill" ones were made with a waffle pattern embossed into the paper supposedly to prevent the ink from running. Only two were printed before they realized this process was impractical. Now one stamp could get as much as $3 Million!

Internationally, collecting postage stamps often equates with big bucks. For example, the "Treskilling Yellow" one from Sweden was misprinted in the wrong color, placing its value at over $2 Million. Historically, Britain's "Penny Black" (the first official adhesive stamp) sold for $200 in the year 2000, and unused went for as much as $3,000!

Or imagine owning the "British Guiana Magenta," a rare stamp with a face value of one cent but an estimated value of $935,000! There is much controversy surrounding this one.

Since there is only one known copy in existence, some say that it was an altered 4-cent one, however these claims were disproved. Others speculate that another copy was discovered but was purchased by Arthur Hind, who owned the original and who quietly destroyed the copy so he wouldn't lose the value. In 1999 a forged copy was found in Bremen, Germany.

Postage stamp collecting is a fun and relatively inexpensive way to collect historical artwork. You may begin by browsing a catalog such as Scott catalog (for US postage stamps), or check out Kenmore Stamp and MysticStamp for stamps online.

Why is soccer lacking popularity in the US compared to other countries?
Question:
Soccer (futbol) is the world's most popular sport. Yet football, basketball, baseball, heck even golf are all more popular in this country. What is up with the lack of popularity of the world's most popular sport in the US?

Answer:
That is a fallacy, the US drew with England in South Africa, any side that draws with England is a good side, and if you are that good, it is a popular sport. You do have other sports to compete with football, which are older, and therefore more ingrained in the American psyche. But am I correct in stating that football is the most popular sport IN THE WORLD among women, between the ages of 10 and 20, in America. If so, then IT IS a very popular sport in America. Some say the English Premiership is the most popular in the world, and we have 3 or 4 American goalkeepers playing regularly for top clubs, this is another sign that it is popular in the US, sure, they are here because the money is better. If the US beat England in South Africa, it would of been only a short stop to the semi-finals. then! who knows. And do you know who the best supported team was, at the finals, outside of South Africa, that's right, the US. I actually had a bet on the US to beat England, I am English and have supported Manchester City for 35 years. So know a thing or two about football.

What is the order of popularity among the four major sports?
Question:
I think the NFL is the biggest in terms of popularity and revenue, but what comes next? If picking from the following group: MLB, NBA, NHL. Your answer must be backed up by TV viewership, league revenue, or similar statistics. If I were to make a guess, it would be: 1. NFL 2. NBA 3. MLB 4. NHL This question is in terms of North America, since I think we can all agree that soccer (football) is the world's most popular sport. Next in line internationally would be debatable, as tennis and cricket are both fairly popular.

Answer:
1 NFL 2 MLB 3 NBA 4 NHL NBA has lost a ton of popularity recently... hockey is dead last by far, NFL is first by a huge margin

How do I get my popularity in school back?
Question:
My name is Regina and was one of the most popular girls from school until I dated a boy who is not so popular. From there, I am not sooo popular anymore. And there is no cheerleading team at my school that could help. I'm a nice person and I smile all the time, but it seems not enough... I know it's not so important to be popular, but for me it kinda is.. How do I get my popularity back? Any tips please? Love, Regina.

Answer:
Wasn't the mean girl in 'Mean girls' named Regina? Whatta coincidence. Anyways, just be yourself. Don't try to act too nice to your "popular" students, they'll just dislike you more for being too preppy. Give it time, they'll realize it's a stupid reason to lose a friend.

How much does popularity affect English speaking countries?
Question:
Popularity of any kind; high school, work, family, etc. Even over the internet, on sites like this, popularity is something some seem to care about. Why? Does being popular gain them a good feeling or what?

Answer:
Yeah it does for some people but I avoid it. You see it gives a sense of entitlement. It gives belonging and it makes it seem like people want them. However alot of popular people hide and don't reveal anything so the reason why they are popular is their cowardice, their inability to show their true selfs, and as soon as they do I think that the people will turn against them. This reminds me of a quote by the Joker from Batman the Dark Knight "They need you right now, but when they don't, they will cast you out. Like a leopard!"

Is popularity in high school really that important to you?
Question:
A lot of people are saying popularity in high school is everything and some people are saying getting an education in high school is everything. What do you think?

Answer:
I think there is a certain extent to which popularity is important. However...I don't think popularity is everything in high school. In my opinion...both popularity and education are major factors...and you shouldn't just focus or lean on one side. It's important to maintain a good grade and have a social life. Try to balance the two...and you'll have a great high school career.

Question:
In recent months, Merkel's popularity in the polls had fallen to an all time low as she supported bailouts for other EU nations. Answer:
Weeks ago she was lashing at Sarkozy for expelling Gypsies. Now she says this, i wonder what new info/orders shes got.

How media houses gather information about the popularity of a certain television progam?
Question:
A media house wishes to gain information on the popularity of certain television programmes. There is a plan to use interviews to gather information. What are THREE methods the media house could use to conduct the interviews? Which other method, other than the interviews, that the media house could use to gather information?

Answer:
I only know one way for sure. A couple times in my life, I've been selected by mail to keep track of what programs my family watches by writing the names and times down in a little booklet they've sent, and sending it back to them with pre-postage paid envelopes. Occasionally, a one dollar bill would be in the envelope with whatever booklet or encouragement they were sending me. I made between three and five dollars both times. And I felt very special and priveledged to be doing it (the first time I was probably like 11, so yeah).
